The eight faces in The Brain of Morbius, which are thereby suggested to be faces of the Doctor from before the first episode of Doctor Who, were an in-joke, faces of Doctor Who writers, directirs, and crew. Shortly after The Brain of Morbius, in The Deadly Assassin (1976), there was dialog establishing Time Lords have a twelve-regeneration limit, where "regeneration" refers to the process (in Doctor Who but not in The Hero of Three Faces, Time Lords do also use the word "regeneration" as a synonym for "incarnation"), so twelve regenerations means a total of thirteen faces/incarnations/bodies/what-you-call. Later episodes established that the capacity to regenerate more than the standard twelve times can be granted or taken away by Time Lord technologies. One popular rationalization in continuity discourse since The Brain of Morbius for the Doctor's extra faces was that those were actually Morbius' faces (the Doctor's dialog in the previous panel alludes to this interpretation), which could be argued from the way the scene is edited, but is inconsistent with Sarah Jane's reactions while watching them. Another popular rationale was that the Doctor had a whole previous regeneration cycle to the action of the series; however the incarnation first appearing in Doctor Who, the first incarnation of the second cycle, would remain "the first Doctor" (e.g., The Three Doctors, 1973) because it was upon being granted a second regeneration cycle that the Doctor adopted the title to the exclusion of his given name. The wraparound idea was originated by Naomi Pardue in the 1980s. The extrapolation corrolary was my contribution to it. Here, the Doctor may be just saying that to have something to tell Sarah (the way he told Sutekh that the TARDIS controls are isomorphic [Pyramids of Mars, 1976] despite not actually believing at the time in isomorphism [Christmas Carol, 2010]). |

The Doctor [a different incarnation] (Doctor Who). Missing scene from The Timeless Children (2020). The Timeless Children incorporates the unknown past regenerations rationalization for the mind-bender faces into screen continuity, with even the Doctor being ignorant of them until now. |
