Morbius, the Doctor (Doctor Who). A scene from The Brain of Morbius (1976). In a mind-bending contest between Time Lords, the progress of the contest is displayed on the mind-bender screen as the losing Time Lord's history of faces in regression from their current face backward. With the continuity revelation of The Timeless Children (2020), the face of the fugitive Doctor was added to this between the last known face and the first unknown face. Any who would argue that this innovation is inappropriate because that Doctor face didn't actually appear in The Brain of Morbius are advised to review the scene and to note that the camera cuts away to a reaction shot of Sarah between the shot of the mind bender screen displaying "the first Doctor" and the shot of the mind bender screen displaying the first unfamiliar face, during which interval there was time for the viewing audience to miss one face. ... Or, perhaps, two. The Doctor's cycle of past faces as displayed in Rogue (2024) included Jo Martin as the fugitive Doctor and Richard E. Grant who played one of the incarnations of the Doctor in the charity sketch Curse of the Fatal Death and voiced another incarnation of the Doctor in the web serial Scream of the Shalka (in addition to playing Dr. Simeon/The Great Intelligence in two episodes in 2013). Whether the face in Rogue is meant to be one of these incarnations or a secret, third REG face is a question that may never be answered. Until or unless it is answered, along with the question of when in the Doctor's history comes either that face or the fugitive face (either or both of which reveals might require the reboot of The Hero of Three Faces continuity like in 2014 in the wake of the war Doctor reveal), what the Rogue appearance of both the fugitive face and the surprise REG face indicates is that both of them, lives forgotten by the Doctor whenever they come in order, are contiguous with all the post-Totters Lane faces whether or not these two faces are post-Totters Lane faces. As Three Faces continuity stands, that leaves nowhere to put the Rogue REG face except immediately previous to the fugitive face, and so there it has been added. (Well, I say "the Rogue REG face" but what I actually used is the existing triangle caricature of the shalka Doctor.) |
