| Dr. McCoy, Captain Kirk (Star Trek). Roddenberry's concept of stardates was always that a thousand count in stardates was a year of the ship's mission. He implemented it in realtime for TNG and, once Berman took over, he did it in DS9 and Voyager as well. But for TOS the implications are 1) the existence of stardates in the five thousands in the third season mean that the three years of TOS covered the entire five year mission, and 2) the existence of stardates in the six thousands in the animated series' second season means the five-year mission got extended a year. (Disclaimer: I feel compelled to admit that there's one stardate in TAS in the seven thousands, less than two hundred short of the stardate for The Motion Picture, which for the purposes of a plausible stardate chronology must be ignored.) |
