Captain Spock (Star Trek), Cadet Tuvok (Star Trek: Voyager). This cartoon was inspired by a discussion I had with another Tumblr blogger about transporter stories. The other's position was that there are a lot of story possibilities in unethical uses of the transporter that Star Trek has never made use of. My rebuttal was that those stories would be set during the early days of the technology; and the events would result in laws and societal taboos, as happened with eugenics as a result of the Khan war, which by Kirk's time and forward would be understood and unstated. For four months after its initial uploading, this cartoon consisted of only one panel, this one. On review I decided it didn't make its point clearly enough so I added another (and this notation). The point being, Captain Janeway's decision in the denoument of the episode Tuvix (1996) was not unlikely to have been made on the basis of ethics laws created during the early days of transporter technology. The other Tumblrer, or another who joined the discussion, suggested that if this were the case then there should have been dialog highlighting it, which is true. Then, at a later date, in a separate discussion of the Tuvix issue it was asserted to me, by someone who'd just seen the episode, that there is in fact dialog saying that the situation does not have legal precedent. I choose to believe that this is another instance of manifestation that the version of Voyager's voyages on our screens are not the actual events experienced by the characters but are events as portrayed in an in-universe docudrama based on Voyager's logs. |
