Tom Thumb, Princess Huncamunca, Lord Grizzle, Glumdalca the giantess, King Arthur, Queen Dollalolla, Merlin (The Opera of Operas), the Doctor (Doctor Who). The Opera of Operas (1733) by Elizabeth Haywood and William Hatchett was a satire on the contemporary tropes of operas and was an adaptation of Henry Fielding's The Tragedy of Tragedies (1731) which was an adaptation of Fielding's Tom Thumb (1730) which was a satire of the contemporary tropes of tragedies. The happy ending of Merlin's appearance at the climax to resurrect all the characters who had killed themselves or each other and who now universally abandoned their misanthropic ways was Haywood and Hatchett's innovation. The Doctor learns they was/is/will be their fiction-plane's version of Merlin in Battlefield (1989), as recapped and expanded upon in this The Hero of Three Faces cartoon. |
